The fifth annual Bay Area Diamond Company ‘Treasure Hunt’ begins Friday, January 17th. This promotion has grown to become a crowd FAVORITE amongst our customers. It’s a fun & free way to make the long Wisconsin wintertime more exciting, as it entices people get outside, thinking, moving, and exploring the Green Bay Area. One stealthy seeker will be the winner of a dazzling piece of Bay Area Diamodn Company treasure!

We received an adventure-filled email after the 2023 Treasure Hunt from a diehard seeker. We thought his story was such a well-written, entertaining recount of the BADC Treasure Hunt that we wanted to share it. Keep reading to walk yourself through ‘the hunt’ with Nick.

“Hi, I'm Nick.  I think in a past life I may have been an explorer because the Bay Area Diamond Treasure Box Challenge has got me looking all over for this elusive treasure.  I've done this for three years and I've come oh so close.  When the clues came out for Week 1, I was ready once again to begin my quest for glory.   To find this box would mean I FINALLY DID IT and I could go home and tell my wife, "see" and bring home the top prize.  As I the clues came out for Week 1, I was sure this was my time. I read the clues:

Clue 1:  This week's clue are going to be a mystery to solve.
Hmmm, I think the story was that Jean Nicolet wore a mysterious Chinese robe as he searched for a Northwest passage.  Or as  historians pointed out, he did not. But maybe that's the mystery.  I'm thinking this has something to do with Jean Nicolet and the mystery of his voyage.

Clue 2:  Please be mindful of the beautiful and delicious foliage as you search.
Okay this clue is throwing me off a little, but I'm going to think outside the box.  I googled delicious foliage and learned that many common leaves are edible such as oak or even birch trees which can be used in chaga tea.  Then I thought maple trees are rather tasty with their maple syrup.  Those trees are common around here and this box has to be close to trees and something related to Jean Nicolet.

Clue 3:  Buffled? Use your head.
I admit I went in and got this clue in advance.  Buffled?  is that a word.  I'm thinking they are just trying to confuse us a little.  Maybe buffled means bluff.  Oh wait, there's a bluff (waterfall overlook at Wequiock Falls) and there also is a Jean Nicolet Statue and trees!  Maybe it's over there!  It's gotta be! I'm ready to do this!

I woke up early and motivated that Sunday morning, telling my wife I GOT THIS!   She wasn't as skeptical as she had been in the past and even encouraged me to get out there!  I knew I had to act fast so that Sunday morning on February 26th, I put some footwarmers in my shoes and got my shovel and headed out confident that I would find it.  What a beautiful day this would be!

As I got to Wequiock Falls I was alone so the first thing I did was take in the breathtaking view of the waterfall that was crystallized and frozen. Wow!!  Incredible view!!   After admiring the perfect panorama and taking a few selfies I began to look.  My first thought was that I think it could be right by the Jean Nicolet statue. Somewhere in all that snow and by all that rock it's hidden.  I began to eagerly dig with my shovel and push and lift snow thinking I'm going to see it.  As I moved the snow with my shovel, feet, and hands, I became a little tired and also disillusioned.  Awwww man.  Maybe it's not here, but around the trees!  I began to look around the trees that were near the waterfall bluff  -- foraging near the trunk and moving the snow -- it's not there either.   I began to question myself . . .  will I be able to find this?  There's too much snow.  Maybe I have the location completely wrong?  Ugh, I think I need another clue.  So after a few hours of fruitless searching I gave up for the day, but I didn't lose hope.  As I got home, I told my wife I think it's there, but there's just soooooo much snow.  She replied, "knowing how you look for things, it probably is there right in front of you and you just missed it."  As she laughed, I laughed to myself and thought, even though I was unsuccessful today, I did have a fun adventure being outside walking, enjoying nature, and exercising my mind!  The reward is the journey and I'm happy that I still have my youthful enthusiasm and belief in myself to take part in this challenge.  One of these days I'm going to win and prove myself right!  I hope!

Btw:  Thank you to Bay Area Diamond Company for this contest.  It's a great way to get people outside and have them become adventurers and sleuths at the same time!  I love what you guys do!
